Zac was sat on the plush leather couch of the shrink’s office and stared unwaveringly at the old man who sat opposite her on his own plush leather chair; his hands were held together on his lap and his head tilted slightly as he took Zac in “So Zachariah,” He began but Zac cut him off.
“My name is just Zac, I’m a chick not a dude,” She corrected with a sullen tone of voice indicating that she detested having to do this every time somebody called her by that stupid boys name.
The shrink nodded “Of course I’m sorry,” He smiled slightly. “So Zac, why are you here today?”
Zac shrugged, her own hands were folded across her chest and her left leg hung over her right one limply, she was on edge to say the least, she hadn’t had a drink all day – her parents had forbid her to leave the house…her room actually so she had no way of getting to the booze and it was killing her “My parents forced me.” She said simply trying to hide the fact he was getting restless.
The shrink nodded “Okay,” He muttered. “Alright…so why do you think they brought you here?”
“Forced me,” Zac corrected. “And I dunno; I’m a shining example of perfect mental health.” The girl’s inner arrogance shone through for a second before going out like a light.
The shrink nodded again and Zac noticed for the first time that he was writing down everything she said.
“Okay Zac, I want you to tell me what you think of your parents right now – can you do that for me?”
“Of course,” Zac said simply and took a breath in trying to calm her racing heart, God she needed a drink now. “I don’t think I’ve done anything wrong, they think that I’m crazy I know they do, well I’m not, I’m not – they’re the crazy ones!”
“And how are they crazy Zac?”
Zac looked at her knees angrily “I…I don’t know…” She hissed.
The shrink hid a small smile before continuing “Interesting…” She muttered. “So you’re sure there is nothing wrong with you?”
Zac’s eyes narrowed, this was a trick question, the shrink knew all about her – no doubt her parents had told him, how could she had not seen this it was a trick all along and now she was backed into a corner, she sighed in defeat “There is one thing…I wouldn’t say it’s anything wrong, I know other people who can do it…have done it.” Zac explained before shaking her head.
“Done what Zac?”
Zac looked up at the man and gave him the ghost of a smile “Talked to the dead.” She stated.
“And you’ve done this have you?” The shrink asked in neither a believing nor disbelieving voice. “Who did you talk to?”
“Yes I have,” Zac said proudly. “I talked to my sister; Lillian.”
“And what did Lillian say?”
“She told me to be good, to not end up like her, I don’t know what she meant by that…Lillian was a grade A student, popular, bubbly and funny…everything everybody wanted to be…why wouldn’t she want me to be that?”
“Have you talked to him since?”
Zac looked down at her feet sadly “No,” She said sadly. “Never – I know nobody believes me…”
The shrink jotted everything down on his clipboard and looked up “And you told your parents this?” He asked.
Zac nodded “Yes…I think…I know that’s why they sent me to see you.”
The shrink nodded “I think that’s enough for today, thank you for coming Zac, it will do you some good don’t worry.”
Zac nodded and smiled weakly “Thanks for listening.” She said despite the fact that’s what he was paid to do.
Zac stood from the couch and shook hands with the shrink before leaving the office through the double oak doors.
